Receiving the was an incredibly meaningful moment in my academic journey. When I learned that I had been selected, I felt a mix of gratitude, disbelief, and quiet happiness. It felt like a reminder that the work I have been pursuing in public health and mental health advocacy is making a difference and that my commitment to serving others is being recognized.

I have always been drawn to mental health advocacy because I have seen how profoundly mental health affects people's daily lives, particularly when stigma, limited resources, or systemic barriers prevent individuals from receiving the care they need. As both a physician and a Master of Public Health student, I have come to appreciate that improving mental health requires more than clinical care. It also requires strong public health policies, community engagement, and advocacy. I believe everyone deserves access to compassionate, equitable mental health services, and I hope to contribute to creating systems that better support individuals and communities.

My experience in the University of New Haven's Master of Public Health program has transformed the way I think about health. I have learned that mental health is deeply influenced by social, environmental, and structural factors, and that meaningful improvements require addressing these broader determinants of health. This perspective has strengthened my commitment to creating lasting change through public health practice and policy.

‘I am particularly passionate about reducing stigma’

Being a member of the WeEmbody (WE) Lab has played an important role in my development as both a student and an emerging public health professional. Through community-engaged research, I have learned the importance of listening to lived experiences, translating research into meaningful action, and understanding how policy shapes health outcomes. These experiences have deepened my commitment to health equity and reinforced my desire to pursue research and advocacy that create lasting change for underserved communities.

The scholarship is especially meaningful because it honors the legacy of Stella Cretella, whose lifelong dedication to mental health awareness and policy reform continues to inspire others. Her work reminds me that meaningful change often begins with individuals who are willing to advocate for those whose voices are not always heard. Her legacy reinforces the importance of compassion, persistence, and service in improving mental health systems.

Looking ahead, I hope to build a career focused on advancing mental health programs, research, and policy that improve access to care for underserved populations. I am particularly passionate about reducing stigma, promoting early intervention, and integrating mental health services more effectively into healthcare systems. My goal is to contribute to a future where mental health is treated with the same dignity, compassion, and urgency as physical health.

I am deeply grateful to my family for their unwavering encouragement throughout my educational journey. I would also like to thank my mentor Dr. Alvin Tran and the WeEmbody Lab for providing invaluable mentorship, research opportunities, and a supportive environment that have strengthened my passion for public health, mental health advocacy, and health equity. Their guidance has played an important role in shaping my professional goals and preparing me for this exciting next chapter.
