About Diane
Diane Smith’s passion is helping students develop the communication skills they need to thrive in college, their careers, and their communities. As coordinator of COMM 1130, the university's foundational communication course, she has led curriculum innovations that have prepared thousands of students for academic and professional success.
An Emmy Award-winning journalist, New York Times bestselling author, documentary producer, and speaker, Diane spent more than 30 years on the air in Connecticut at WTNH-TV, CPTV, CTN, and WTIC NewsTalk 1080. She anchored news broadcasts, hosted radio talk shows, and produced and moderated public affairs programming. As anchor and senior producer for CTN—the state's version of C-SPAN—she provided live coverage of Connecticut government and politics and moderated statewide town hall meetings and public forums on issues including mental health, civil discourse, equity in education, and access to healthcare.
Diane is the co-author, with Morning Joe co-host Mika Brzezinski, of the New York Times bestseller Obsessed: America's Food Addiction and My Own. She is also the author of six books based on Positively Connecticut, the longest-running local television series in Connecticut history.
As president of Diane Smith Media, she has produced Emmy Award-winning documentaries and videos for nonprofit organizations and provided media and public speaking training for organizations including Tiffany & Co., Subway, Protein Sciences, and Choate Rosemary Hall.
Her contributions to journalism, public service, and education have earned numerous honors, including induction into the Connecticut Journalism Hall of Fame, the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences Silver Circle, and the Connecticut Women's Hall of Fame. Diane has received the Governor's Award for Excellence in Culture and Tourism, the National Association of Secretaries of State Medallion Award, and an honorary doctorate from Charter Oak State College.
